Our son is just over six months old now, so you can imagine we’re using his high chair quite a bit now. We started baby led weaning/feeding about a week after Bear turned five months old. That’s when we began using the IKEA antilop high chair at least twice a day, if not more, for feeding, taking his helmet on and off, and occasionally if I’m cooking and he wants to be nearby.
So far, we love this high chair.
I like simple pieces like this that don’t cost an arm and a leg, and I think it’ll last us through multiple babies if we decide to add to our family in the future.
So much of IKEA’s decor and furniture is affordable and I am a big fan. I will admit, though, that some of their bigger pieces are made with very cheap wood that isn’t super durable. That being said, I still trust many of their products.
Especially when it comes to baby products, parents always want to choose what is best for their individual baby. All babies are different and have different needs. So it’s best to always go with your gut when comparing products.
I felt that a high chair like this IKEA one is both safe and affordable. And with a couple of inexpensive additions, it was perfect for our little boy.
However, I know not all parents share the same feelings as me. So today, I’m going to be breaking down all the pros and cons while giving a full, honest review of the IKEA antilop high chair. Join me to learn about this popular baby item…

IKEA Antilop High Chair Review
How can I purchase this high chair?
This high chair is available in-store, curbside pickup, or delivery (though only certain areas may have access to delivery). Don’t be afraid to go pick this out in person, so you can really look it over before buying. It is easy to fit into a car before it’s assembled and fairly lightweight.
Does it come in other colors/styles?
Unfortunately, the antilop high chair only comes in white. Thankfully white goes with everything. You can always purchase special additions to add some more personality, however, if you choose.

Pros | IKEA antilop high chair review
Very affordable at $19.99 each
I’m a frugal gal and will only invest in something pricey if it’s truly worth it and has “extras” that I need. Personally, I feel that a high chair at this affordable $19.99 price is great and works just as well as the $100 ones by big brands. If money is a factor for you, this could be a big reason you choose the Antilop high chair.
Easy to clean
This high chair is easy to wipe down. Well, that is if you choose not to use a cushioned seat cover. It can be annoying to remove this to wipe under, but many times I use the high chair without the cover and it’s a cinch to clean. My baby doesn’t seem any less comfortable or supported without the cover.
High chair is easy to take apart to store away
Not all IKEA products are intuitive to put together. I find this one very easy to assemble by yourself and just as easy to take apart to store away. The legs screw on quickly and the tray is simple to slide and snap into place.
Easy to customize and give a makeover to
Many parents like to add their own style to their baby’s high chair. I didn’t feel this was necessary, but do a quick Pinterest search and you’ll see so many ideas for making over the antilop high chair. My favorite was one with stick-on paper wraps with a wood appearance that can wrap around the legs. Then a cushion cover for baby to sit in, a tray cover, and footrest is added. You’d be surprised in how nice you can make these look!
Lightweight
I also enjoy that this high chair is lightweight. I move this high chair all over the kitchen most days. My baby likes to be close to me at all times, so I will move it to the end of the table when we eat, but move it closer to my food prep area when I’m cooking so he has some company and a nice view of what I’m doing. This high chair is so easy to move even when I have my baby on my hip and one hand to use. Definitely something I find convenient.

Cons | IKEA antilop high chair review
Has additional costs for the tray and other accessories
As you may know, it’s recommended that babies always have a footrest that their feet can rest on at all times. This ensures that baby is sitting up straight and reduces the risk of choking significantly. This high chair unfortunately does not come with a footrest. Thankfully, Amazon carries a variety of footrests you can add to the antilop high chair. I like and use this one HERE because it complements the high chair and I just love natural wood. It slides onto the legs and can be adjusted to any height which makes it perfect for this IKEA high chair.
You will also need to pay a bit extra to purchase a seat cushion cover for the high chair. Younger babies may need this to sit up better, but I’ve found that my boy doesn’t really need it and it gets dirty way too quickly. Without the cover, I can easily wipe the high chair down without having to throw anything into the washer. So this is completely optional. A tray, however, is pretty necessary. I use this one HERE that can be purchased at IKEA or on Amazon. It is around $15 and does add a bit more to the cost, but still makes the antilop high chair affordable.
High chair legs splay outwards which could cause others to trip
The first thing I noticed is how easily it is to forget the legs are sticking out and to trip over them. Just ask my husband. We have both made this mistake. Thankfully, when not in use it slides right under our dinner table, but when our son is eating we have to be especially mindful of space for the high chair. It doesn’t take long to adjust to, but you will need to be careful at first.
No five-point harness
This could be a deal breaker for some, but this high chair does not have a five-point harness and instead has a standard three-point harness. That means it has a standard lap buckle in place, without the chest being fastened down. This might make some people nervous, but for our son we feel that sitting close to him when he’s in it and watching him is the best way to prevent anything crazy from happening. We feel comfortable doing this instead of investing in some expensive, fancy high chair with a five-point harness.

Would I recommend the IKEA high chair?
Yes, I would absolutely recommend the IKEA high chair to any parent in need of a high chair. Mainly because it is so affordable. It isn’t fancy but it sure gets the job done. I don’t feel that most babies need all the bells and whistles on a high chair. I don’t feel that a 5-point harness is necessary as long as baby is within arm’s reach and supervised while in the high chair. It’s a simple chair, but with the tray and a footrest added it has everything a baby needs to safely and comfortably eat a meal.
