It’s the perfect time to clean windows in your home with holidays approaching and many hosting get-togethers in their home. Winter can be just as messy (if not messier) than summer.
With constant foot traffic and snowy weather there are always more messes in the house during winter it seems like. Plus all the extra houseguests from hosting…
Inevitably, a little one always manages to smear their hands over glass windows or doors. Although little fingerprints may seem cute, we all want sparkly clean windows.
That’s where this secret, magical concoction comes into play…
I make a natural, homemade window cleaning spray with vinegar and essential oils that leave streak-free glass so no one has any idea a toddler was just all over your house.
There are so many benefits to using this easy window cleaning solution:
- Non-toxic
- Cheap to make
- Smells amazing
- Fast and easy to mix up
- Leaves streak-free glass

Can I use any type of essential oil in this homemade window cleaner?
Yes, however citrus oils in particular help sanitize and clean surfaces better than some others. I also think these scents smell better than herbal essential oils. Lemon or orange are my favorite ones to use in this recipe because they leave behind such a delicious, refreshing scent that makes everything feel so much cleaner.
Why use vinegar?
Vinegar is naturally antibacterial. It kills bacteria (and some viruses) and its highly acidic nature helps combat grime on surfaces. This is great news for cleaning glass and windows.
Sometimes gunk can get stuck on surfaces and just a little bit of vinegar is all that’s needed to do the job.
It also neutralizes odors and is super affordable. Since it is a natural cleaning solution it is also safe to use in your home around children and pets, and no special gloves are needed when cleaning with it.
Now that I’ve convinced you to use it, let’s get into all the little details on making this homemade window cleaner with vinegar and essential oils…

Newspaper
Funnel or liquid measuring cup

Steps | homemade window cleaner with vinegar
1. Start by measuring and adding 1 cup of water to the glass spray bottle.
2. Next add in a cup of white vinegar. Try to leave about a half inch of space at the top.
3. Add 12+ drops of essential oil to your vinegar water. Shake vigorously to combine ingredients. Add more drops as necessary to disguise vinegar scent.
4. To use, spray directly on glass and promptly wipe away using folded up newspaper.

Tips for Success | homemade window cleaner with vinegar
Use only a glass spray bottle as essential oils can eat away at plastic bottles over time. You don’t want plastic chemicals in your natural, homemade window cleaning spray.
I highly recommend using newspaper versus microfiber cloths for cleaning glass. This type of cloth does not absorb liquid well and I personally don’t recommend using them. Newspaper is much more preferable to get streak-free results.
Be sure to shake well before each use. This ensures the mixture stays homogenous and is evenly distributed throughout the bottle.
