Equipment

  • 1 8 x 8 square baking pan
  • 1 rubber spatula
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 small pots/saucepans
  • measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 +1/3 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup red, white, and pink sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
  • Next, coat a 8x8 baking dish with butter, oil, or nonstick cooking spray to prevent the brownies from sticking. Parchment paper could also be used instead.
  • Then melt the butter on the stovetop on medium-low heat with the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips, setting aside to cool a little afterward.
  • Next, sift all dry ingredients together.
  • Then you can stir in the melted butter and melted chocolate into the dry mix, adding the eggs and vanilla extract next.
  • Be sure to mix thoroughly until everything is homogeneous, but do not overmix.
  • Last, fold in the remaining 1/3 cup of chocolate chips, along with the sprinkles, into the batter without overmixing.
  • Then pour the batter into the baking dish, using a spatula to smooth the batter out evenly.
  • Bake in the oven, at 350º F, for about 30-40 minutes.
  • Remove brownies from the oven when a toothpick comes out clean about an inch from the edges. The center will firm up more once the brownies cool down.
  • Cool for two hours before slicing. Slice into 9 pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the brownie batter. This means as soon as everything is fully incorporated and evenly distributed, stop mixing.
  • For cakier Valentine’s Day Brownies, add one more egg to the mix before baking.
  • For a vegan version: Use 2 tablespoons of chia seeds mixed with 6 tablespoons of water in place of eggs, replace the butter with vegetable oil, and use dark chocolate chips.
  • Oven times can vary, especially depending on the type of pan you use. Metal pans may require less time than suggested, while ceramic and glass can take a bit longer to bake.
  • If you prefer nutty brownies, add in ½ cup of chopped walnuts instead of the chocolate bits. I prefer more chocolate than the nuts, but whatever suits you is fine.
  • If you can’t wait for your Valentine’s Day Brownies to cool because you’re impatient, carefully use a spatula or large spoon to dish it out into a bowl and serve with a scoop of ice cream over the hot brownie. Eating it as a sundae is a wonderful idea.
