Discover the art of crafting an easy, unique DIY summer wreath for your home this season for less than $10. As a twist on a traditional wreath, this piece is made from a sun hat, ribbon, and flowers. Perfect for displaying on an interior wall or an exterior door.

Summertime has almost arrived, so I am in full summer decorating mode already. Just last week, I made a couple stops into craft stores for some supplies and decorating pieces. I didn’t have a whole lot on hand for summer because last year I kind of skipped out on summer decor.
The great thing about cottages, or at least mine, is that they don’t need a ton of spring/summer decor because by nature they already exude a lot of natural spring/summer flair. Fresh flowers, a garden, and natural fibers and linens, along with neutral colors, already set the foundation for summertime.
However, I am still trying to add a little bit into the mix for the summer season.
A DIY summer wreath is the perfect addition. Especially this cute sun hat wreath I made the other day.

I am using it on a side door since it is a smaller wreath. It looks so cute and made just for this space. It also adds a bit of charm to the patio space since it’s in direct view from there.

I will say, it is so adorable that I almost wanted to put it on an interior door in the cottage. It would have looked wonderful hanging on a hook off the Craftsman-style door in the kitchen.
Simple and understated, with just enough to reflect the coming warm season.

I’ve added a striped ribbon and some faux flowers to add a special touch to the sun hat and I’m loving it.

The best part is how cheap and affordable it is! Less than $10 total to make.
Come see what inspired me and how I went about making this DIY summer wreath…
What is a DIY summer wreath?
Well, I’m certain we’re all aware of what a wreath is, but what makes a summer wreath?
A summer wreath is a wreath that feels like summer when you glance at it. It brings back memories of pool days, gardening, and fun in the sun. Being outdoors in the fresh sunshine is probably the first thing we all picture about summer when we close our eyes.
Decorated with citrus fruits, summer herbs (like lavender, rosemary, mint, etc.), flowers such as sunflowers, coneflowers, and daisies, along with ribbon, a summer wreath is the quintessential decor for a home during the months of June through August.

Most wreaths are used as decor for exterior or interior doors, but could also be displayed on a wall. They look particularly nice as a piece added to a gallery wall.
What inspired this summer wreath?
I was inspired by a sun hat wreath I saw on Target’s website. It was a large, floppy hat with many flowers tucked into the ribbon wrapped around it. It was stunning but also had a hefty price tag: $39.49.

Cute, but not cute enough to spend $40 on. I decided to make one myself.
The final product of my crafting is not exact, but I love it just as much.

How to Make a DIY Summer Wreath
Supplies and Tools
Sun hat or straw hat (here is one similar to what I used)
Striped ribbon (I used some Wondershop ribbon from Target–though it’s no longer sold here–that was leftover from the holidays)
Hot glue gun with glue sticks
Scissors
Floral shears (wire cutters)

Instructions
Select the right sun hat
First, start by finding a hat that is the style and size you prefer. Think about the space you’ll be hanging it in. I highly recommend a natural-colored sun hat because it’s versatile. The space you put it in will determine the size you want.
I found a smaller sun hat for about $7 and was happy with this. Five Below and Michael’s had a better, cheaper selection than Hobby Lobby, but I had a gift card and went with this hat instead. Try craft stores, clothing stores, and secondhand stores for the right one for your DIY summer wreath.

Add in ribbons for flair
The hat I bought already had a ribbon wrapped around it, and honestly it wouldn’t have looked bad at all if I had kept it. I really wanted it to be striped, though. I already had some leftover ribbon from the holiday season late last year. So why not use the remaining ribbon to add a little more farmhouse flair to it? Striped linens, ribbons, and pillows are notoriously common in country homes like cottages and farmhouses. More summer vibes that I love. I measured about 4 feet of ribbon and wrapped it around the hat, starting at the bottom.

As I got to the bottom I left a tail on both ends to have some ribbon dangling down and make it a bit more feminine. I didn’t tie the ends together, but I did lightly wrap and glue them together. Then, I secured the ribbon in place on the hat using glue from the hot glue gun. I used a dot every 4 inches or so around the circumference of the hat. Immediately press the ribbon down after adding each glue dot.

Flowers or herbs make it just right
Lastly, I trimmed my faux flowers using florals shears, so the stems would be the right length. You want them long enough to stick under the ribbon, but short enough that there isn’t any extra poking out from underneath the ribbon.

After tucking the flowers (or herbs) under the ribbon, along the bottom of the hat, add glue to keep them in place. You can add flowers just toward the lower end of the hat or along the sides too, depending on how many flowers you have. I added mine toward the bottom since I only had a small bundle. At this time, you can add herbs in addition to the flowers or leave it as is. Hang it in a window or on a door like I did for a similar look.

Tips for Making a Summer Wreath
Use real, dried flowers or herbs if you have them on hand already. This can save you a little money on decorating it.
You can use either a floppy sun hat or a hat like I used for my wreath. If you use a floppy hat, your wreath will be much bigger and may need a longer piece of ribbon, too. Wrap it around the hat, hang it up, step back and survey it before you begin gluing.
